Outdoors Photo - Mini-term 2009 - Bentley School - Dr. Kral

Final Project: Photo Book

This is http://teach.kralsite.com.  If you are working from home, please check this website for any updated instructions.

The Final Project is a Photo Book with a minimum of 20 pages and at least 20 images in it.  Try to put 2 to 4 photos per page if you can, but that is going beyond the absolute minimum expectation.  You are allowed up to 28 pages in a letter size soft cover book.  Do not exceed $20.00 including tax and shipping.

You have full creative control over the project.  None of the Assignment Book photos are required but of course they can be used if you want.

Make a book that you will want to share with your family and friends.  You will 'get' one hard copy printed (accounted for in the mini-term course fee).  The Photo Book will be purchased from your online publishing "store front."

Before you begin, think about what kind of book you want to make.  For ideas of reasons why one would take photos, see our textbook, pages 17-21.

Tell the teacher what kind of photo book you are making.  It can be a mixture of photos (diary and great shots, for example).

Preparing your photos

I suggest planning an outline of your book, selecting photos you want to use, copying all the candidate photos in one folder (example photobook-yourname), edit them in photoshop, then upload as the final step.  You can and will crop inside lulu.com [or InDesign,] but preliminary cropping may be useful.  In lulu.com it may be desired not to crop (much) since there are constraints on each photo book page.

Instructions for working on your book

1) Go to http://lulu.com

2) Get your own account.  This account is for the purpose of this class.  If you want to do other things on lulu.com, please wait until you have your printed Photo Book in your hand a week after the course is over.

You must use your real first name and the first initial of your last name.  Do not use your full LAST name anywhere: not in your account name, not on the book cover, and not on the inside cover page. On the book title (later), you do not need to enter the first initial of your last name.

I will want to be able to get into your account, so you account login ID must be your official Bentley student email address.

Do not enter any personal data into the account, especially not a credit card!

You should give me your LULU password (on a list in class), that should not be the same as any other password you have anywhere else.  Do not give out your Bentley password (ever)!  The storefront name must be bentleyminitermyourname (e.g. bentleyminitermamanda).

Make it a public, not a private account.

3)  Make a Photo Book using Lulu Studio.  The middle column of the main http://www.lulu.com page has "Photo Creations."  Click on Photo Books.  Start with a soft cover book, letter size portrait orientation.  We'll discuss other options later.

[If you want to use InDesign to lay out your book instead, please see the Teacher.  You will not use a Photo Book.]

4) Upload photos (see above).  We may need to shrink them in size before uploading in case the network is slow.  This can be done by selecting all the images in Adobe Bridge using Tools -> Photoshop -> Image Processor... or directly in Photoshop (or your photo editor at home), one by one.

Be sure to save your drafts!!!

5)  When you are done, publish it.  Please do not charge a profit in your price!

Publish it with Direct Access (not General or Private).

If you want to make changes, you can revise or un-publish the photo book, work on it some more in Lulu Studio, then publish it again.

Build a Preview after you are done, so that your family and friends can see your book without printing it.  Use "design your own" custom preview and select all pages (entire book).

6) Email me the book identification number.  Also put it on the list in the classroom.  For example, 6245124 for the book at http://www.lulu.com/content/6245124.

Here is some help:  Lulu Studio Photo Book FAQ.

Here is also an example of what the book could look like after 5 minutes of work (I showed this in class): [basic idea]

[For those of you who want to design the book with Adobe InDesign, here is that help file: Book Formatting FAQ (not for Photo Books). The materials directory has templates for the cover page.]
